Core aeration pulls thousands of small plugs of soil out of your lawn, opening channels that let water, air, and nutrients reach the roots. Lawns here in the Pacific Northwest sit on clay-heavy soil that compacts under foot traffic and our long wet season — which is why aeration is one of the most effective things you can do for a tired lawn.

Compacted soil
Foot traffic and clay squeeze the pore space shut. Roots stay shallow and water sits on top.

Why it matters here
Water reaches the roots
On compacted soil, water pools on the surface or runs off. Open channels let it soak down where roots can actually use it.
The soil can breathe
Roots need oxygen as much as moisture. Relieving compaction lets air move through the root zone again.
Fertilizer can do its job
Nutrients sitting on top of hard soil do very little. After aeration they reach the root zone, where they feed the plant.
Core, not spike
Spike aerators and “aerator shoes” only punch holes — and can pack the soil around each hole even tighter. A core aerator uses hollow tines that cut and lift a plug out of the lawn, which is what actually relieves compaction. On clay or high-traffic Northwest lawns, core aeration is the one worth doing.
When it works best
Early fall is the sweet spot for our cool-season grasses — the soil is still warm, the rains are returning, and new seed establishes before winter. Late spring is the second-best window. The soil should be moist, not muddy.
Right after aeration
Aeration opens the door — these steps walk through it.
- Overseed while the channels are open — seed falling into the holes germinates faster and thicker.
- Apply starter fertilizer so new seedlings have nutrients from day one.
- Water deeply in the days that follow.
- Leave the plugs. They break down in a week or two and feed the soil as they go.
